I came out of the strange world of behavioural psychology, where I interviewed hundreds of women in anxiety and depressing research centers about their unique and often misunderstood lives. This previous career helped me developed my knack for deep listening, and keen observational skills – skills that come in handy as screenwriter!
During that time I wrote hundreds of poems. Poems that later would be turned into art songs, a one-act play, performance art, an entire visual art show, and once a one-act play! As a poet, I loved collaboration and what other artists and collaborators did with my narratives.
By the time I found my way to UBC to pursue an MFA in Creative Writing, I already had established myself as a poet, storyteller, and collaborator. It was during my MFA in Creative Writing at UBC, where I first fell in love with screenwriting. It was also where I discovered my knack for writing emotionally layered, feisty, funny female characters in high-concept comedies and dramedies.
Since graduating five years ago, I’ve had the good fortune of having two comedy TV pilots place as a semi-finalist or second rounder at the Austin Film Festival, had two short films produced, and recently started working with comedy actors in a series of linked sketch comedies. I am working toward a career in writing for television – for both children and adults. When I am not busy writing or making films, I teach fun and interactive playful creative writing workshops to children.
